It’s summer in the city, and around every corner you can enjoy a different open-air event. Of course, the traditional Auer Dult is a must among Munich’s open-air highlights. For a week and a half, strollers, treasure hunters, and carousel riders alike can dive into the hustle and bustle at Mariahilfplatz. The Jakobidult offers just the right thing for everyone.
Over 700 Years of History
The Jakobidult is the summer edition of the Auer Dult and was first held in 1310 on St.-Jakobs-Platz. It wasn’t until 1796 that the festival was moved to the Au, which is where the nickname “Auer Dult” comes from. It is held three times a year and transforms the area around Mariahilf Church into a colorful folk festival. From July 25 through August 2, you can visit this year’s Jakobidult and stroll past around 250 stalls spread across 22,000 square meters.
Traditionally, the market features all kinds of antiques, household goods, and surprising treasures. The food stalls offer delicacies like Steckerlfisch, Kasspatzen, and Rahmfleckerl . If you have a sweet tooth, try Striezel, crêpes, chocolate-covered fruit, and even Middle Eastern sweets! Children and the young at heart will especially enjoy the chain swing, the ship swing, and the small Ferris wheel. After taking a few rides, try your luck at duck fishing and can toss to take home some great prizes.

The Auer Dult is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., though the rides don’t open until 10:30 a.m. Bargain hunters should come on Tuesday, July 28, for Family Day, when you’ll find discounts on the rides. If you’d rather take it easy, find a spot in the beer garden and enjoy some Bavarian delicacies or treat yourself to a beer. If, on the other hand, you’re interested in the history of the Dult, you can join one of the guided tours.
