Tucked away in a back alley, you’ll discover this art oasis, where paintings, furniture, and works of art are piled high. It feels a bit like stepping into a little dream world straight out of a movie. Away from Schwabing’s hip boutiques and trendy fashion stores, this art oasis invites you to browse through antiques.
A labyrinth of vintage treasures
Step into the backyard, head down into the basement, and the fantastic Kunstoase will unfold before you. Behind the door lies a densely packed labyrinth of antique furniture and decorative items. The narrow aisles are lined with hundreds of paintings in wide frames, massive gold mirrors in a wide variety of shapes, and intricately detailed art prints displayed on long Oriental rugs.
If you look up, you’ll see countless crystal chandeliers, Tiffany glass lamps, and nostalgic pendant lights lined up here. The shelves and tables are filled with crystal glasses, porcelain bowls, and classic table lamps with colorful shades. Between the heavy, carved mirror frames, paintings featuring angels or floral motifs are propped up. Golden Buddha statues and smaller decorative objects also fill the shelves to the brim.
Buy and Rent at the Kunstoase
The Kunstoase’s selection also extends to the store’s courtyard. A stained-glass window bearing the store’s name is set into the ivy-covered facade, underscoring the magic of the place. The outdoor area features additional items such as a chaise longue, glass display cases with tableware, and a decorative fountain. The fountain depicts two children at a water pump. Even here, antique chandeliers hang from the covered sections of the building.
The shop’s owner, Manfred, is a painter himself and wants to use the Kunstoase to create his own world where he can escape typical Munich life for a brief moment. We think he’s definitely succeeded! As you stroll through the store, you’ll find a wide variety of one-of-a-kind pieces.
