An eerie yet spectacular report is currently causing a stir in the Munich region. A cougar may be roaming freely in the immediate vicinity of Munich Airport. According to a spokeswoman for the Erding District Office, an initial expert assessment suggests it could be a cougar. The incident is causing great astonishment and heightened caution among residents and day-trippers alike.
Spotted in the Notzinger Moos: Where did this wild animal come from?

The terrifying moment took place in the municipality of Oberding, more specifically in the Notzinger Moos. This idyllic marshland lies just a few kilometers from Munich Airport. According to the district authorities, there is even already a photograph of the big cat, though it cannot be released at this time.
Where the animal might have come from remains a mystery to authorities at this time, as the press spokesperson stated that its origin is completely unclear. There is currently no information about a circus in the region from which the puma might have escaped. The Erding police have also been informed of the sighting, but they do not yet have any further details either. It was also initially unclear whether there would be a large-scale search operation.
Appeal from the authorities: Here’s what you need to keep in mind now
Since an encounter with a big cat is by no means harmless, the Erding District Office reacted immediately and issued an urgent call for caution to the public. Through social media, the authorities informed people in the region of specific safety guidelines:
- Keep dogs on a leash: Owners are urged not to let their dogs run free under any circumstances.
- Supervise children: The district administration urges parents not to let small children play unsupervised.
- Report sightings immediately: Anyone who sees the animal or has information about its whereabouts should contact the police immediately.
So stay extremely alert if you’re out and about in the Erding district or around the marshland, and keep your eyes peeled!
