The start of the year in Munich tends to drag on a bit. While there are still plenty of things to do in the city, it’s worth looking beyond the horizon, especially now in winter. Just under an hour east of our state capital, you’ll find a place that seems physically impossible. One town that is definitely one of the best excursion tips around Munich is Wasserburg am Inn. This small town is located on a peninsula that is almost completely surrounded by the river.
When the river begins to freeze slightly at the shore, Wasserburg unfolds an almost melancholic beauty. It is the perfect place for anyone who wants to escape everyday life in Munich without having to travel to the often crowded ski resorts.
The “Venice of Bavaria” in hibernation

What makes Wasserburg so special is its topography: the Inn River forms such a tight loop here that the old town can only be reached via a narrow spit of land. Due to its dense development and direct location on the water, the small town is often compared to Venice. But instead of gondolas, you’ll find massive walls that have withstood flooding for centuries.
Incidentally, the old town with its pastel facades lies in a deep basin gorge. Looking down from the so-called “Schöne Aussicht” (beautiful view) on the steep bank, you can see the entire town lying in the riverbed as if on a silver platter. A truly unmistakable panoramic view!
Famous traces and historical depth

Wasserburg was once one of the richest towns in Bavaria, as can still be seen today in the magnificent town hall and stately town houses. The first town hall was probably built in the town as early as 1300. Despite all the subsequent alterations and renovations, it has retained its late Gothic character and is a real sight to behold.
There are many historic houses around the old town. Opposite the town hall, you can even admire one of the most important late Baroque stucco facades in southern Germany! If it gets too cold after a leisurely stroll through the town, the doors of the museum are open. In better weather, you can also take a boat trip on the Inn.
