As an art lover in Munich, your heart truly swells with joy; after all, we even have a massive art district where one exhibition follows another. From historical classics to contemporary works, you’ll find everything you could possibly want here—well, almost everything. One art movement is still criminally neglected in many places, even though it has long since found numerous followers: urban art. You won’t find it in the Kunstareal either, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a dedicated museum for it in Munich. For 10 years now, the MUCA has been part of Munich’s art scene, offering a stage to street artists from around the world .
The underrated art form
In the 1980s, the graffiti trend gradually made its way over to Germany. Munich was considered a pioneer in this regard, even ahead of Berlin. Since 2015, the city on the Isar has even had its own dedicated graffiti officer—the first in Germany. It therefore comes as little surprise that the following year saw the opening of MUCA, the nation’s first museum of urban art.
However, its origins date back to 2013 with the m|u|c|a Gallery (Munich Urban and Contemporary Art) at Maximiliansstraße 54. This eventually became the Museum for Urban and Contemporary Art on Hotterstraße in 2016, right in the heart of Munich’s Old Town. The two founders, Stephanie and Christian Utz, have made it their mission to classify urban and street art within art history and establish it as an independent, serious art form. In doing so, MUCA aims to be not just a museum, but also a meeting place for artists in the scene.
MUCA: Experience Street Art
The MUCA itself is already a work of art: various artworks and graffiti adorn the building’s exterior walls, and sculptures are scattered across the green spaces. The museum’s main building is located in a former substation; next to it lies an old air-raid shelter from World War II. This structure has previously served as a hotel and a nightclub; today, it houses the MUCA’s special exhibitions.
Over 1,200 works by renowned street artists from around the world are housed in the main exhibition, including Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Vhils, and Herakut. The MUCA Collection is considered one of the most significant collections of urban art in all of Europe. In addition, the museum also houses its own restaurant, the Mural. Here, you can experience art not only visually but also through the flavors on your plate. Despite its central location, both the museum itself and its restaurant are still considered absolute hidden gems.
