Are you looking for the perfect day trip from Munich that takes you out of the big city and into the countryside? Then grab your family or friends and head to the beautiful Ammersee. In Utting, the Ex Ornamentis plant maze is a real attraction that surprises visitors every year with spectacular designs and exciting puzzles.
An adventure among sunflowers, hemp, and corn

What makes Ex Ornamentis so special? It’s not just an ordinary corn maze. The vast field consists of a diverse mix of sunflowers, hemp, and corn. Every year, the operators create a new work of art that’s best admired in all its glory from the air. You can see the creations from past years on the organizer’s website.
The 2026 season revolves around the theme “All Roads Lead to Rome!” Winding paths lead you right through a giant image of the ancient Colosseum. To make sure you don’t get completely lost along the way, there’s an interactive scavenger hunt at the entrance with different game modes—you can play as a gladiator apprentice, a Roman merchant, or Mercury, the messenger of the gods. It’s guaranteed to be a blast for the little ones.
The location is also an absolute highlight: After your adventure, you’ll be right on the shore of Lake Ammer in just a few minutes. It’s the perfect spot to cool off with a dip in the lake after solving the puzzles or to enjoy the sunset with a picnic.
The Treasure Hunt in the Horror Maze

Looking for more adrenaline? Then don’t miss the legendary treasure hunt in the horror maze. On select fall evenings ( September 11 & 25, 2026), the cozy field transforms into a scene of terror from 9:00 PM to 11:30 PM.
Armed only with your sense of direction, you’ll have to search the maze for hidden treasures. But be careful: lurking behind the walls are numerous scare actors dressed as werewolves, vampires, demons, and other spooky creatures who’ll try to lead you astray. It’s the perfect way to get in the Halloween spirit!
