What could be more beautiful in Bavaria than its world-famous nature? In the heart of the Berchtesgaden National Park, some impressive natural spectacles await us. These include not only panoramic views, but also almost tropical waterfalls. The Königsbachfall waterfall at Königssee is one of the most impressive, but also one of the most controversial natural monuments in Berchtesgaden National Park today. It plunges over several cascades a total of about 200 meters into the lake.
The Königsbach rises in the Hagen Mountains and falls spectacularly over steep rock faces on the eastern shore of Lake Königssee. The waterfall actually consists of three large sections: the steep drop into the lake, the middle cascade zone, and the gentler stream above at the Königsbachalm.
A natural spectacle that is no longer so secret

For a long time, the upper part of the waterfall was considered an absolute insider tip. But like so many beautiful things, it didn’t stay that way for long. Thanks to social media, news of this magical waterfall spread quickly. It became particularly well known for its turquoise natural pools, natural stone basins in the upper part of the waterfall. With a view over the entire lake, they are perfect for Instagram.
However, these photogenic moments also had some disadvantages. The enormous crowds led to massive environmental damage in the surrounding area and numerous rescue operations—some even fatal, as the extremely dangerous and ice-cold currents were underestimated. Since 2021, the area around the pools at Königsbachfall has therefore been closed off. Entering the restricted area can result in heavy fines. However, the closure will expire at the end of October 2026. What will happen after that is still unclear.
How to catch a glimpse of the Königsbach Falls anyway

Even though the most famous spots at Königsbachfall are closed for good reason, you can still see the waterfall legally and safely. To do so, hike to Malerwinkel and follow the path towards Rabenwand. From there, you have a wonderful view of the lower part of the falls without entering the restricted areas.
The region also offers plenty of other fantastic hikes. If you take the boat on Lake Königssee, you can get off at the “Kessel” stop. From there , a hiking trail leads to the Königsbachalm, where you can cross the waterfall.
