Fantastic location surrounded by idyllic castle park
Between 1546 and 1577, an impressive Renaissance palace with a courtyard garden was built on the 504 m high Dachau Schlossberg. This four-winged palace complex became the preferred summer residence of the Bavarian dukes thanks to its magnificent green spaces. The ballroom on the upper floor now serves as a concert hall, giving every event a royal touch.
Dachau Castle is enthroned on a hill above the old town of Dachau and offers an impressive panorama as far as the Alps. Although it is located on the outskirts of Munich, getting there by public transport is extremely convenient. The S-Bahn line S20 from Munich Central Station goes directly to Dachau, from where you can easily get to the castle on the MVV regional bus line 719.
Facts, curiosities and interesting facts about Dachau Palace
1. the special feature
Since the 19th century, Dachau Palace has only had one of its original four wings. King Max Joseph I had the other wings removed after the Napoleonic occupation and the damage it caused. Due to financial restrictions after the war, the king did not have the necessary budget for a comprehensive renovation. Only the baroque ballroom wing in the west of the original four-winged complex has been preserved to this day.
2 The design
The fascinating Renaissance ceiling was moved to the National Museum in Munich in 1868, but returned to its original location in 1977. The original Renaissance style was thus restored. The opulent staircase, on the other hand, was designed by Max Emanuel in the Régence style during the renovation.
3. the court garden
The court garden, also known as the palace park, was laid out from 1572. From 1578, square beds were laid out for herbs and flowers, and several pavilions were erected to enjoy the view from the Schlossberg. Today, only three of the pavilions remain. Over the years, the flowerbeds were replaced by elaborately decorated broderie beds. Later, an area was designed as an English landscape garden and several fruit trees were planted.
