For nearly three decades, dedicated citizens in Munich-Trudering fought for their own cultural center. When it finally opened in 2005, it didn’t even have chairs—which were eventually purchased with donations. Today, the Trudering Cultural Center is a vibrant hub for art, music, and culture, whose extraordinary history continues to tell the story of the neighborhood’s sense of community.
Now Candlelight is also bringing a special musical magic to the Trudering Cultural Center: Starting in January 2027, Candlelight Babies will allow even the youngest music fans to experience live classical music by the light of thousands of candles for the first time.
From a Citizens’ Initiative to the “Gasteig of the East”
As early as 1976, dedicated citizens founded the Trudering Community Center Association (Bürgerzentrum Trudering e. V.) to create a cultural gathering place for their neighborhood. With great dedication and half a million Deutschmarks they raised themselves, this dream finally began to take shape. But it wasn’t until March 18, 2005—almost 30 years later—that the cultural center opened its doors. At the opening, then-Mayor Christian Ude referred to the building as the “Gasteig of the East”—a fitting nickname for a place that, to this day, brings together art, music, and community in eastern Munich.
Events at the Trudering Cultural Center
From theater and cabaret to live concerts, art exhibitions, and workshops, the Trudering Cultural Center offers a diverse program for all generations. Among the highlights are the Trudering Art Days. The Trudering Cultural Center’s program also features a family event: Candlelight Babies. During 45-minute live classical concerts by the light of thousands of candles, babies aged 0 to 36 months can discover the magic of music together with their parents.
